About
A physician-executive
practice.
Pathque is led by Martin Burks IV, a board-certified pathologist and physician-executive. He holds an MD from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, an MBA from the Darden School of Business, and is a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists.
His residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology was completed at Wake Forest School of Medicine. He has held appointments affiliated with the National Institutes of Health and continues to practice clinical pathology.
The firm reflects a specific conviction: that clinical AI should be treated as a medical technology, evaluated locally by the people who use it, and governed by a physician whose name is attached to the attestation. This is not a novel idea. It is the standard the clinical laboratory has maintained for sixty years. It has simply not yet been applied to the instruments that are now making clinical decisions.
Pathque exists because that application is overdue, and because most health systems cannot justify a full-time Chief AI Officer to lead it. A fractional engagement — part-time, under a named physician, embedded inside existing governance — makes the work possible for institutions that would otherwise do nothing.
